Pirate themed BPA free personalized melamine plates - Arr Matey!
If you have a child, you have probably heard to avoid “BPA” in any of their plastic bottles or plates. But what is BPA and why is it linked to problems?
To be scientific, BPA is short for Bisphenol A, an organic compound with two phenol functional groups. With that out of the way, it is a basic component of several popular types of plastics and hundreds of millions of pounds of the stuff are produced every year.
BPA has been linked to cell damage, mental retardation, and spontaneous abortions in mice, among other problems. It is thought to mimic hormones and does the damage in relatively low concentrations.
BPA is most commonly found in polycarbonate plastics – clear plastic should be considered to contain BPA unless proven otherwise. This means plastic baby bottles, water bottles and aluminum can linings, unless BPA free, can leach the chemical into food or drink.
It is not currently known if the amount of BPA leached into a child’s or pregnant women’s diet through ordinary exposure to plastics is enough to cause the damage observed in the lab with mice, but the risk is enough to cause demand for BPA-free plastic children’s plates and cups.
Our Lipstick Shades line of melamine personalized children’s plates, personalized children’s mugs and personalized sippy cups are all completely BPA free.
