What Christmas card is right for you?
The holiday season is coming soon. It’s the time of year we think about
the many blessings we’ve received and the friends and family that have been the biggest gift of all. Mail boxes are full of
brightly colored envelopes that contain well wishes, family updates and hopes of happiness for the new year. Are you excitedly
planning how to package your Christmas sentiments? Or does the idea of sending out all of those Christmas cards leave you feeling
overwhelmed?
Not to fear! Here are some ideas that will help you get those cards out with time and energy to spare. After all, you’re going to need it!
The Basic Christmas Card
The easiest greeting to send is the signed Christmas card. You can buy a generic box of Christmas cards anywhere. Whip those puppies out and just start signing your name. It may
not be personal, but at least you cared enough to send a card, right?
The Christmas Letter
The Christmas letter is usually
typed out on your computer and printed on 8 ½ by 11 bordered paper that you can find at all craft and office supply stores. This is a great way to keep friends and family, particularly those that live out of town or state, up to date on the highlights of
your past year. Focus on the new opportunities and/or changes over the last few months or year surrounding each individual family
member. An easy way to organize your thoughts is to list events that happened each month. For example, January – new puppy;
February – Laura had her first date; March – hubby got a promotion; etc.
Consider including pictures, either enclosed in your
letter or inserted as jpeg’s in your computer document.
The Photo Card
This is my personal favorite! Who doesn’t
love looking at a picture of an entire family wearing Santa hats or reindeer antlers? Okay, so maybe your family photos are
a little more subdued and sophisticated. Why not show them off?
There are a couple of different styles for this
type of greeting: the flat photo card and the traditional fold-over card. The flat card is intended to feature your family picture
and a simple greeting, like “Merry Christmas from The Smith’s.”
The photograph is placed on the front flap of the fold-over
card. This allows you the flexibility to either have a succinct message inside; or you can hand write a message or print a brief
family or personal update.
Family Photographs
While many people rely on professional photographers for their family Christmas
pictures, time and expense can be an issue that deters others. After all, if you’ve waited until November to try to schedule
an appointment with a professional, good luck finding one with an open appointment! However, this does not mean that you can’t
send out a beautiful holiday photo card. Just have a friend take the picture for you. In this digital age, we can all
point and click, look at the image on the digital camera and determine if the shot is up to snuff.
Thanksgiving is also a great
opportunity to have a family picture made, as kids are home from college and the family is all together.
Time Savers
Make
sending out your Christmas cards a family affair. Take a few evenings in November to turn off the tv and gather around the dining
room table and sign your holiday cards together as a family. Remember, your attitude sets the tone. Pop some popcorn or
bake some brownies for a snack and make it fun, rather than a chore.
Use the computer to print your holiday greetings. Even if you purchase a box of Christmas cards, you can set up a Word or Publisher document on your computer to print out your message.
Let
someone else do it. Many stationery and printing shops offer printing services for a nominal fee. Pick out your Christmas
cards and decide what you want to say. Let their printer format and print your holiday message. Then you can simply pick
them up and send them out.
Whatever style you choose, and however you decide to create them, enjoy the process of putting them
together. After all, they are sweet holiday wishes sent to those you love the most!
